Mormons diversify church leadership
SALT LAKE CITY — The Mormon church made history Saturday by selecting its first Latin American apostle and first apostle of Asian ancestry. The selections of Ulisses Soares of Brazil and Gerrit W. Gong, a Chinese-American, were announced at a twice-annual conference of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. They will join the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, which before Saturday was made up entirely of white men from the United States, with the exception of one German male. (AP)

Immigrant teens can get abortions
NEW YORK — A federal judge issued a preliminary injunction that prevents the government from blocking access to abortion services for pregnant minors in federal immigration custody. Judge Tanya S. Chutkan of US District Court in Washington ruled Friday that the government cannot interfere with teenagers’ access to medical appointments, counseling, abortion procedures, or other care. She also said the case can proceed as a class action. (New York Times)
Visitors to US face social-media check
NEW YORK — Nearly all applicants for a visa to enter the United States will be asked to submit their social-media user names for the past five years, under proposed rules the State Department issued Friday. In September, the Trump administration announced that applicants for immigrant visas would be asked for social-media data. The new proposal would vastly expand that order to cover some 14 million people each year. (New York Times)
