This week it was Brianna Duncan’s turn.
One week after finishing second in three events at the Massachusetts state track championship, the Cambridge senior won the long jump at Saturday’s New England meet in New Britain, Conn., jumping 18 feet 11.25 inches. And even better, Duncan edged Worcester Tech’s Adja Sackor, who last week beat Duncan but came in second this time at 18-7.5.
Duncan, who will attend the University of North Carolina, also took third in the 100 meters at 12.08 seconds. Norton’s Brooke-Lynn Williams won the event in 11.90.
It was a good day for other local track stars as well.
Lynn Tech senior Justin Lewis won the high jump for a second straight year, clearing 6-11. Lewis won the state title at 6-8. Weston’s Samantha Thompson was the top female finisher in the high jump, clearing 5-3 to take fifth.
Newton South senior Anthony DeNitto won the long jump in 23-2.25. North Reading senior Julia Valenti won the pole vault at 12-3. Teammate Rachel Hill was fourth at 10-9. North Andover’s Erick Duffy also won the pole vault, clearing 15-6.
Dighton-Rehoboth’s Julia Campezato won the javelin.
with a throw of 130-02, edging second-place finisher Shira Stoller of Sharon (126-4). The boys’ title went to Billerica’s Connor Finnegan with a distance of 188 feet.
Falmouth’s Adelaide Cooke was second in the discus with a distance of 117-4. Dracut’s Mikaylah Schwartz was third in the shot put (37-11.75) with Dennis-Yarmouth’s Chloe Eressey (37-7) fourth.
Quincy’s Mike Munroe was second in the shot put with a 56-4 effort. Cambridge’s Esu Alemseged was second in the 1600, finishing in 4:12.51 and Tewksbury sophomore Rachel Sessa was third in the 1600 at 4:54.75.
All-State 100 champion Smith Charles of Milton was fourth in the same event at New Englands, crossing the line in 11.07. Woburn’s Avery Leydon was second in the 400 at 57.11 while Watertown’s Austin Lin was fourth in the same event in 49.39.
St. John’s Prep sophomore Nate Hobbs was second in the triple jump at 45-6.75. Ashland’s Alyssa Zee won the 200 in 24.98. The 800 title went to Newton South’s Clare Martin in 2:09.53. Milton’s girls 4 x 800 team took first in 9 minutes 11 seconds. The Cambridge boys’ 4 x 800 team was second in 7:49.65. The Natick boys won the 4 x 400 with Lucas Holt, Brian Holihan, Matt Walak, and Myles Holt recording a 3:18.25.
