“Rainbow Time,’’ a new film written and directed by Linas Phillips, will screen at the Independent Film Festival of Boston this weekend.

It stars Tobin Bell, an actor who grew up in Weymouth and is best known for his villainous role in the “Saw’’ horror movies, and Melanie Lynskey, from the HBO comedy series “Togetherness’’ (you may also remember her debut in the 1994 film “Heavenly Creatures’’ with Kate Winslet). In addition to writing and directing, Phillips also plays the role of Shonzi, a 40-year-old mentally challenged man in the film.

It will screen at the Somerville Theatre on May 1 at 8 p.m., and after Phillips answer questions.
