Animal control officials are looking for a monkey and its owner after the primate bit a 9-year-old girl in Virginia Beach, Va.

Meghan Conti, a spokeswoman for the Virginia Beach Police Department’s animal control unit, said that the child was bitten at about 10:30 p.m. Wednesday on a sidewalk near the beach.

Conti said the monkey’s owner fled the area with the animal after the bite.

The primate is a white-headed capuchin monkey and is blackish brown with white on its fur.

Conti said it is a little larger than a house cat.

The girl was taken to an emergency room, but there were no other details on her injuries.
