Acting governor

When Karyn Polito’s office sent out her daily public schedule for Monday, it came with an unusual title: Not “Lieutenant Governor Karyn Polito’’ but “Acting Governor Karyn Polito.’’ What gives? The state Constitution explains that the lieutenant governor steps into the role of governor when the actual governor is (a) dead or (b) out of state. Readers will be relieved to learn that Governor Charlie Baker was merely on a trip to Washington, D.C., for a meeting of the National Governors Association. Meanwhile, Acting Governor Polito was headed to Conway to inspect tornado damage and thank emergency workers for their efforts.
