Xaverian’s Hurst to Raiders in fifth round
Associated Press

The Raiders traded up in the fifth round of the NFL Draft on Saturday to take talented Michigan pass rusher Maurice Hurst, who fell from a projected first-round pick to off some draft boards because of concerns from a heart condition that got him sent home from the Scouting Combine.

‘‘It’s money,’’ Hurst said. ‘‘Just upset and disappointed in teams that decided not to pick me. But one got a great player for very little. So I’m very excited to be part of the Raiders organization.’’

The Raiders traded the 159th and 185th picks to Indianapolis for the 140th pick and took Hurst, who played at Xaverian High School in Westwood.

Hurst was an All-American and one of the most productive defensive players in the country last season. He had 5½ sacks as an interior rusher and led all nose tackles and defensive tackles with 49 total quarterback pressures, according to Pro Football Focus.

But he got sent home from the combine after a heart issue was detected. Hurst said it was something he has dealt with for a long time and hadn’t impacted him on the field. He said he has been cleared by doctors at Harvard and Michigan but that didn’t prevent his draft fall.

‘‘It’s tough just going into it thinking that you’re one of the top players in the draft and having good tape and everything like that,’’ he said.

Seahawks add Griffin

The Seahawks selected Central Florida linebacker Shaquem Griffin in the fifth round, reuniting the feel-good story of the draft with his twin brother.

Griffin lost his left hand to amputation when he was younger, and became the player everyone was hoping would get a shot in the NFL. He was a star at Central Florida despite playing with just one hand. He was the American Athletic Conference defensive player of the year in 2016 and the MVP of UCF’s Peach Bowl victory against Auburn last season when UCF went 13-0.

‘‘It’s just so much. I’m extremely blessed,’’ Shaquem said on a conference call.

A groundswell of support got him an invite to the combine in Indianapolis, where he stunned onlookers by bench-pressing 225 pounds a staggering 20 times with a prosthetic left hand and then covered the 40-yard dash in 4.38 seconds.

Griffin will be reunited with his brother Shaquill, who was a third-round pick of the Seahawks in 2017 and became a starter in his rookie season.

Austin to Cowboys

The Cowboys acquired receiver Tavon Austin from the Rams for a sixth-round pick in this year’s draft.

It’s the second receiver-related move during the draft after the Cowboys dumped franchise touchdown catch leader Dez Bryant in a cost-cutting decision this month. Dallas drafted Michael Gallup in the third round Friday.

Offers for Luck

Owner Jim Irsay acknowledged at an impromptu news conference on Saturday that the Colts were contacted about trading star quarterback Andrew Luck, and the Colts had no interest.

‘‘Trust me, there are people who would have given an unprecedented amount of draft picks for him, all with a No. 1 behind them and we wouldn’t even consider it,’’ Irsay said.

Luck, the No. 1 overall pick in the 2012 draft, missed all of last season after surgery for a partially torn labrum in his throwing shoulder.

QB Lauletta to Giants

The Giants selected the first quarterback of the third day, Richmond’s Kyle Lauletta, early in the fourth round with pick No. 109.

The Giants passed on trying to get their quarterback of the future to replace Eli Manning in the first round, taking running back Saquon Barkley at No. 2 overall.

Lauletta doesn’t have a big arm, but he showed good athleticism and accuracy.

Local connections

Penn wide receiver Justin Watson was taken in the fourth round, 144 overall, by the Buccaneers. Boston College cornerback Kamrin Moore was taken in the sixth round (No. 189) . . . Yale all-Ivy League linebacker Foyesade Oluokun was taken by the Falcons in the sixth round (No. 200 overall) . . . The Eagles traded up in the seventh round to select Australian rugby player Jordan Mailata with pick No. 233. Mailata, 6 feet 7 inches and 346 pounds, is projected as an offensive tackle. The Eagles gave the Patriots pick No. 250 and a seventh-rounder next year to move up 17 spots . . . Wisconsin tight end Troy Fumagalli, who is missing the index finger on his left hand, went to Denver in the fifth round . . . ‘‘Mr. Irrelevant’’ 2018 is SMU junior wide receiver Trey Quinn. He was the final player selected in the three-day draft, No. 256 overall by the Redskins. Quinn threw a no-hitter in the opening round of the 2008 Little League World Series for South Lake Charles, La. . . . Alabama had 11 players drafted, setting a school record.
