Italy is SalonCapri co-owner Nicholas Penna’s vacation destination of choice, but he also has a soft spot for Ogunquit, Maine. The Milton native, who lives in Newton with his wife, Amy, and their three children, is lead stylist of SalonCapri, which has locations in Boston (on Newbury Street), Dedham, and Newton. Next year will mark the 50th anniversary of the salon’s founding by Penna’s parents, Nick and Gina, in Hyde Park. We caught up with Penna, 43, to talk all things travel.
Favorite vacation spot? Barcelona [because] it’s a super cool, bohemian city and it has a little bit of everything. It’s Old World Europe mixed with a cosmopolitan city. There are Michelin star restaurants and side street tapas joints, cool boutique shopping, a beach scene, and the people are just so sexy. Also, anywhere in Italy holds a place in my heart, and I would never turn down an opportunity to visit my parents’ homeland (they’re from Abruzzo).
Favorite food or drink while vacationing? While in Barcelona, I like to order a regional wine like a cava with some Serrano ham.
Where would you like to travel to but haven’t? Australia for the amazing surf and rugged, raw beauty. I haven’t been there yet because it’s too far! I also have yet to explore any Scandinavian countries, but they are on my short bucket list because of their emerging food scenes and chic style.
One item you can’t leave home without when traveling? My wife, Amy, because we are travel twins. She does a lot of research beforehand so we don’t miss any must-see places, and she keeps us on track with a schedule.
Aisle or window? An aisle seat because I don’t like to disturb anyone and I’m able to move around more.
Favorite childhood travel memory? My family started traveling to Maine at a young age and we completely fell in love with the Maine coastline because of its peacefulness. We ended up getting a beach house up there [in Ogunquit] years later, and it has become a family home where we spend our summers.
Guilty pleasure when traveling? My wife and I like to research the coolest boutiques and any hip new designers and we usually end up splurging on a little shopping when we’re in a new place. For instance, last time we went to Barcelona, we sought out a little place that sells handmade espadrilles so my wife could snag a pair.
Best travel tip? If it doesn’t fit in the carry-on, don’t bring it. Even if you’re traveling for a week or longer.
