Recent bird sightings as reported to the Massachusetts Audubon Society:

Low numbers of common redpolls were reported in Greater Boston, the MetroWest area, and on the North Shore, while strong numbers of evening grosbeaks were sighted in the MetroWest area, the Route 2 corridor, and on the South Shore. Pine siskins, the most numerous winter finch at the moment, were spotted across eastern Massachusetts and the Connecticut River Valley, and more than 26 red crossbills were reported at the Mass Audubon’s Moose Hill Wildlife Sanctuary.

Groton: On Fitch’s Bridge and Fairgrounds Road, there was a northern goshawk, a pine grosbeak, a bald eagle, 165 house finches, a pine siskin, two Lapland longspurs, and two fox sparrows.

Nantucket: A sage thrasher was reported for the first time in the island’s history, spending most of its time around Low Beach. There was also an American woodcock, a cattle egret, two tree swallows, several evening grosbeaks, and a vesper sparrow.

Miscellaneous: Among sightings were a Baltimore oriole in Westford, one orange-crowned and one black-and-white warbler at Fresh Pond in Cambridge, a prothonotary warbler at Great Neck in Ipswich, individual black-throated blue warblers at Hall’s Pond Sanctuary in Brookline and the Mount Auburn Cemetery in Cambridge, a pine warbler at the Mass Audubon’s Habitat Wildlife Sanctuary in Belmont, 11 sandhill cranes in West Newbury, a mew gull at Loblolly Cove on Cape Ann in Rockport, and a rough-legged hawk at the Wayland Community Garden.
