Rain forecast for Monday into the evening is expected to delay the removal of tens of thousands of flags planted on Boston Common for Memorial Day and help is needed to take them down Tuesday.
The Massachusetts Military Heroes Fund is looking for volunteers to help at lunch time on Tuesday to dismantle the display of 37,251 flags placed in memory of the state’s fallen dating back to the American Revolution, according to a statement from its organizers.
Packing away the flags when they are wet would ruin them, organizers said.
“Last Wednesday, a volunteer army of 600 volunteers spent three hours planting these flags – tomorrow we only need a fraction of that and we can do our work retiring the flag garden within an hour or so,’’ said Diane Nealon, executive director of the fund, in the statement.
Volunteers are asked to meet at 12:30 p.m. at the Soldiers and Sailors Monument near Charles and Beacon streets.
“If enough people help, we can do it in an hour, but any amount of time the public can give would be amazing,’’ Nealon said. “We had 40 volunteers signed up to help [Monday night] but we have to start from scratch for tomorrow since many of our folks can’t be there.’’
