Graffiti with meaning at the North End’s Ward 8
Nick Frattaroli

Where: Ward 8 in the North End

What: Graffiti by local artist Matthew Zaremba — with hidden meanings.

Whose Idea: Owner Nick Frattaroli wanted to honor his family at Ward 8, but not with photos or cutely named appetizers. Instead, he opted for graffiti. Instagram sensation Matthew Zaremba — whose professional motto is “Aha moments in a nuh-uh world’’ — used marker to festoon Frattaroli’s walls with meaningful, black-and-white art. Lions represent Frattaroli’s toddler son, Leo; jewels represent his baby daughter, nicknamed Gem. Big geometric flowers are an homage to his wife. “I wanted the art to mean something to me without being direct. I was going for street style,’’ Frattaroli says. Look around on your way to the bathroom, too; Zaremba’s artist brother, Nick, added some colorful etchings to the hallway. The choice wasn’t completely random: The Zarembas are cousins of one of Frattaroli’s employees.
