Clark University was targeted with “racist and anti-Semitic’’ posters over the past several days, an action the president of the Worcester college denounced.
President David Angel identified Vanguard America as the group responsible for putting the posters and stickers on the walls of buildings around the urban campus. Angel, in a statement sent to the Clark community Tuesday, ordered them removed.
“We at Clark University refuse to be a platform for this hate speech,’’ he said in his statement. adding that other college campuses have been targeted by the group in recent months. “Let us join together and denounce these racist views loudly and without qualification.’’
Angel said speaking out against hatred is a necessary step in order to defeat its advocates.
“We combat hate by raising our voices and by reaffirming the values of diversity, inclusion, and respect that bring strength to our community,’’ he said in the statement.
Vanguard America has been identified by the Anti-Defamation League as a white supremacist group that uses the Internet and the distribution of fliers, posters, and stickers intent on recruiting male students on college campus to join them.
“Vanguard America is a white supremacist group that opposes multiculturalism and believes that America is an exclusively white nation,’’ according to the Anti-Defamation League.
