A 29-year-old woman suffered life-threatening injuries early Sunday morning when she was caught in the door of an SUV and dragged hundreds of feet down a street after a fight on Massachusetts Avenue in Dorchester, police say.

Police said two women had been driving together when they stopped in front of 1024 Massachusetts Avenue, got out of the SUV, and fought. When the victim tried to get back into the vehicle, the other woman allegedly drove off, trapping the victim in the door.

After being dragged, the woman was run over by a taxi that hit the SUV around 3:55 a.m., investigators said.

Officers found her about a block away at the intersection of Massachusetts Avenue and Pompeii Street, where the taxi struck the vehicle.

The victim was taken to Boston Medical Center with life-threatening injuries.

The driver of the car, 26-year-old Brianna Smith of Dorchester, has been charged with assault and battery by means of a dangerous weapon (a vehicle) and operating under the influence of alcohol causing serious bodily injury, police spokeswoman Rachel McGuire said.

McGuire said two other women were involved in the incident, although exactly how was unclear. One of those two women was taken to Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center as a precaution, McGuire said.

The cab driver stayed at the scene to cooperate with the investigation and will not be charged, McGuire said.

Smith is scheduled to be arraigned Tuesday at Roxbury District Court.
