Prospective Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump has said some of his celebrity backers will be front and center at this month’s Republican National Convention, which has prompted some to wonder if that might include Tom Brady. After all, last December, the Patriots QB called The Donald a “good friend,’’ adding “I have known him for a long time. I support all my friends. That is what I have to say.’’
But now it appears that TB12 won’t be in Cleveland when Republicans convene to nominate Trump. So says ESPN’s Adam Schefter. “Despite speculation to contrary, Pats QB Tom Brady will not be attending Republican National Convention in Cleveland this month, per source,’’ Schefter tweeted Tuesday morning.
In an interview last February, Trump said he believed Brady would endorse him if he asked him to. But “he’s got sponsors, he’s got all of his different things that he has to do. And I told him not to,’’ Trump told WEEI. “I think he would do it if I asked him. I’ve never asked him to do it. But I think he’d do it if I asked him.’’
VIP Trump supporters who will speak on his behalf at the convention include hot-tempered former University of Indiana basketball coach Bobby Knight and boxing promoterDon King. No word on whether coach Bill Belichick or team owner Robert Kraft, both of whom are friendly with Trump, have been invited to the convention. The Republican get-together July 18-21 doesn’t conflict with the Patriots training camp, which opens July 27.
