FRIDAY’S WEATHER: It was chilly (48 degrees!) early in the morning, then warmed to 75 degrees by the time the players came off the field.
FUNDAMENTALLY SPEAKING: Infield coach Brian Butterfield ran a teamwide defensive drill that focused on how to play bunts and another for pickoffs on the bases. Half the pitchers also went through a “rag ball’’ drill. In that drill, a coach with a fungo bat lines a cloth baseball to the mound, forcing the hurlers to make a quick play. “Rag ball is the most fun,’’ David Price said.
PLAYER OF THE DAY: Rick Porcello takes his defensive work seriously. The reigning Cy Young Award winner hustled through every rotation and made accurate throws each time. As is the case with his preparation for starts, Porcello does his homework.
AROUND THE BASES: Chris Sale stopped to sign autographs and accommodated a number of children. When some adults started to muscle their way in, Sale put a stop to it. “I’ll sign for kids and win games for you guys,’’ he said . . . A crowd of 1,287 attended the workout. Big crowds are expected over the weekend . . . The Sox had 23 coaches on the field along with manager John Farrell.
MEDICAL REPORT: No issues so far.
SCHEDULE: The team will be on the field to stretch and then throw at 10 a.m. Saturday. The first drills will start 35 minutes later.
