Nadal’s clay run ends in Madrid

Top-ranked tennis player Rafael Nadal lost to Dominic Thiem, 7-5, 6-3, in the Madrid Open quarterfinals Friday. The loss ended Nadal’s 21-match win streak on clay. Nadal, who on Thursday broke John McEnroe’s 1984 record for sets won on the same surface by winning his 50th straight on clay, hadn't lost a set on clay since falling to Thiem in Rome a year ago. Nadal will lose his world No. 1 ranking to Roger Federer. Thiem will face sixth seed Kevin Anderson, who downed Dusan Lajovic, 7-6 (7-3), 3-6, 6-3. Second seed Alexander Zverev beat seventh-seeded John Isner, 6-4, 7-5, to face Denis Shapovalov, who beat Kyle Edmund, 7-5, 6-7 (6-8), 6-4. On the women’s side, 10th seed Petra Kvitova beat No. 6 Karolina Pliskova, 7-6 (7-4), 6-3, in an all-Czech semi. Kvitova will face Kiki Bertens, who beat No. 7 Caroline Garcia, 6-2, 6-2.

US trounces South Korea

Bruins defenseman Charlie Mc­Avoy and American captain Patrick Kane each notched two goals and three assists as the United States drubbed South Korea, 13-1, at the world championships in Herning, Denmark. Cam Atkinson and Derek Ryan also had two goals apiece. The United States leads Group B with 13 points, with Canada (10), Finland (9), and Denmark (8) trailing . . . The Maple Leafs looked in-house to replace general manager Lou Lamoriello, promoting assistant GM Kyle Dubas, 32, to the position.

Vargas will skip a start

The Mets will skip struggling lefthander Jason Vargas's next turn in the rotation on Tuesday. He will instead throw a simulated game before the Mets host Toronto . . . The Nationals transferred outfielder Adam Eaton to the 60-day disabled list, a day after he had surgery on his left ankle . . . Astros outfielder George Springer is day to day with a bruised left elbow after being hit by a pitch from Rangers starter Cole Hamels Friday . . . Lefthander Andrew Miller (strained left hamstring) was activated from the 10-day disabled list by the Indians. . . The Orioles put struggling righty Chris Tillman (lower back strain) on the 10-day disabled list, less than 24 hours after he yielded six runs to the Royals in 1⅓ innings, raising his ERA to 10.46.

Harvick wins Kansas pole

Kevin Harvick turned in a best lap of 188.811 miles per hour to claim the pole for Saturday night’s NASCAR Monster Energy KC Masterpiece 400 in Kansas City, K.C. Ryan Blaney was a distant second in 187.825 m.p.h., with Kyle Busch, Aric Almirola, and Chase Elliott rounding out the top five. Matt Kenseth will make his season debut in the No. 6 Ford for Roush Fenway Racing . . .
