In a letter to Congress dated Sept. 2, 2015, Secretary of State John Kerry noted “Iran’s continued support for terrorist and proxy groups throughout the region, its propping up of the Assad regime in Syria, its efforts to undermine the stability of its regional neighbors, and the threat it poses to Israel. We have no illusion that this behavior will change following implementation of the’’ Iran nuclear deal.
Kerry also stated that “we will continue to provide Israel and our [Gulf Cooperation Council] partners’’ — six oil-rich monarchies, including Saudi Arabia — “the robust assistance they need to deter and combat Iranian destabilizing activity in the region.’’
On Jan. 21, the secretary advised us that, “right now, we are not seeing the early delivery of funds going to [terrorism] at this point in time. I’m sure at some point some of it will’’ (“Iran sanctions relief funds may help terrorists,’’ Page A5, Jan. 22).
We cannot be sure the Iran deal will prevent Iran from acquiring a nuclear weapon. We can be sure the challenges the world faces from a newly rich Iran, which Kerry assures us will fund terror, are deadly challenges capable of wreaking worldwide havoc potentially as devastating as nuclear challenges.
