A Newburyport man was arrested Saturday after leading state and local police on a wild chase by car and foot through parts of Lynn, Revere, and Saugus, twice abandoning his car, before he was taken into custody in a neighborhood, according to the State Police.
Stephen M. Staffiery, 48, was charged with 16 violations, including operating under the influence of drugs, possession of heroin, and failure to stop for police, State Police said in a statement.
The charges also include being a fugitive from justice in New Hampshire, where a prior warrant had been issued for his arrest, according to the State Police.
The chase started around 1:50 p.m., when a state trooper patrolling the Lynnway (Route 1A) pulled over Staffiery’s Infinity QX4 for motor vehicle violations, State Police said.
Staffiery got out of the car, then ran to a nearby commercial property, and the trooper chased after him, said David Procopio, a State Police spokesman.
During the foot pursuit, Staffiery managed to return to his car.
That began a chase along Route 1A, local streets, and eventually onto busy Route 1 in Revere and Saugus.
Along the way, Staffiery struck three cars, but there were no injuries, the statement said.
In Saugus, Staffiery abandoned his vehicle for a second time, and ran into a residential neighborhood.
Transit police, along with officers from Revere and Saugus, followed him on foot. He was taken into custody, following a police struggle, the statement said.
Saugus resident Paul Preston was surprised by the commotion he watched out the kitchen window of his home on Dale Street.
“It didn’t sink in,’’ what was unfolding, he said in a telephone interview. “It really surprised me when I saw the officers pursuing him with their guns drawn.’’
After a brief struggle, police took Staffiery into custody. He was booked at the State Police barracks in Revere. He is being held without bail, and was transferred to the Middleton House of Correction, the statement said.
He is due to be arraigned Tuesday in Lynn District Court.
