Yawkey charity instrumental in reaching underserved communities

In regard to Bob Hohler’s article on the legacy of the Yawkey foundation (“Good works and insider culture, the twin legacies of Yawkey charity,’’ Page A1, Feb. 12), at Catholic Charities of Boston we have seen firsthand the foundation’s immediate and significant impact on the quality of life for tens of thousands of people in our region’s most underserved communities.

More than a decade ago, the Yawkey foundation contributed the much-needed funding to build a new community service center on Columbia Road in Dorchester, bringing together the Haitian Multi-Service Center and the Greater Boston Community Service Center, two of Catholic Charities’ longstanding children and family service centers.

This institution has changed the shape of the community and allowed our organization to have a lasting impact on at-risk children and teens and adult learners while providing basic-needs services to our most vulnerable neighbors.

We are immensely grateful for the foundation’s continued support and commitment to helping our region’s neediest families.
