US is a republic (lest we forget)

In his July 2 letter “By whatever margin, Brexit is a vote of no confidence in the elites,’’ Edward Gelles writes that “one person, one vote . . . is the essence of democracy.’’ But the United States is a republic, not a democracy.

Popularity should not determine election outcomes. Popular will would likely mean prejudice would be allowed if the election turnout leaned in that direction.
