Northern Essex Community College has received a $10,000 grant from the state to aid the development of its early college program, which allows high school students to earn college credits before they graduate. The college will welcome juniors and seniors from schools north of Boston, including Amesbury, Haverhill, Lawrence, and Pentucket Regional. The 11th-grade program will offer courses in English, psychology, math, and science; the 12th-grade program will include courses in computer science, health, engineering, and education. The grant is part of a total of $80,000 that was awarded by the Massachusetts Boards of Higher Education and Elementary and Secondary Education to public colleges, universities, and high schools that are developing early college programs.
Revere resident Lou Krinsky turns 100 on Sunday, March 18. Krinsky, who lives at the Jack Statter House, was born in Boston’s West End and grew up in Suffolk Square in Malden, according to his granddaughter, Ariel Sasso Gardner. He worked in Boston’s garment industry from high school until retirement, raising his family on Point of Pines. Krinsky lived in Florida from 1982 until moving back to Revere in 2010 to be closer to his family. He will celebrate his 100th birthday with friends and family at Angelica’s in Middleton.
The MarbleheadRacial Justice Team and will host a conversation on race on Monday, March 19, from 7 to 8:30 p.m in the lower-level meeting room at the library, 235 Pleasant St. in Marblehead. A video depicting common situations where someone is being racially profiled will be shown. Attendees will also discuss how to speak up when they encounter racist behavior.
The conversation will be moderated by members of the Marblehead Racial Justice Team.
Former Boston Bruins players will play the Stoneham Freedom Fighters hockey team in their sixth annual hockey game to raise money for the New England Center and Home for Veterans in Boston. The game will take place March 25 at 7 p.m. at the Stoneham Arena, 101 Montvale Ave. A custom goalie mask designed and painted by Jesse’s Custom Design of Wilmington will be raffled off. Architects For Learning, which provides assessments, consultation services, and customized instruction for students, has opened its second location, at 50 Dunham Road in Beverly. The Needham-based company works to improve students’ ability to stay focused in class, remain organized, and get homework done on time. It also works with schools to help teachers develop curriculum and Individualized Education Programs.
