Scott dropped as Lakers coach

Byron Scott will not return to coach the Los Angeles Lakers next season, a person with knowledge of the situation told the Associated Press. The person spoke on condition of anonymity Sunday night because the team hadn’t announced Scott’s firing yet. Scott coached the Lakers for the two worst seasons in franchise history, going 38-126. The Lakers finished with the NBA’s second-worst record this season at 17-65. Scott received praise from general manager Mitch Kupchak last week for his handling of Kobe Bryant’s farewell season. But the Lakers struggled to play competent defense or to put together coherent game plans with a roster of youngsters and unimpressive veterans.The Lakers are looking for their fifth head coach since Phil Jackson left in 2011 . . . Oklahoma City Thunder stars Russell ­Westbrook and Kevin Durant were fined by the NBA for violations in Game 4 of their Western Conference playoff series. Westbrook was fined $25,000 for directing inappropriate language at a fan in Dallas after he was fouled by Salah Mejri on a drive to the basket Saturday. Durant was penalized $15,000 for his flagrant-2 foul on Justin Anderson with 50 seconds left in the game, for which Durant was ejected . . . LeBron­ James has not committed to play for the United States at the Rio Olympics, he confirmed at the Cavaliers’ shootaround. A message Saturday on the Twitter account of longtime NBA writer Peter Vecsey said James and the Knicks’ Carmelo Anthony had accepted Olympic invites. When asked if he has committed, James said: ‘‘I have not.’’ James would have a chance to win his third Olympic gold medal if he plays in Brazil this summer.

. . . Hornets forward Nicolas Batum said he hasn’t ruled himself out for Game 4 of Charlotte’s series against the Miami Heat on Monday night. Batum­ missed Game 3 with a strained left foot. He walked around at practice Sunday, his left foot heavily taped, and shot some jumpers.

Kipchoge sets London mark

Eliud Kipchoge defended his London Marathon title by running only eight seconds slower than the world record and setting a course record on a chilly morning. The 31-year-old Kenyan­ completed the 26.2-mile route in front of Buckingham Palace in 2 hours, 3 minutes, 5 seconds. The world record of 2:02:57 was set by Dennis Kimetto in 2014. Jemima Sumgong won the women’s race for the first time after overcoming a fall with around 4 miles remaining. The 31-year-old Kenyan won in 2:22:58, with defending champion Tigist Tufa of Ethiopia five seconds behind.

British astronaut Tim Peake completed the marathon — from 250 miles above the Earth. Peake ran the race harnessed to a treadmill aboard the International Space Station, with a simulation of the route through London’s streets playing on an iPad. He finished in 3:35. Guinness World Records says that’s a record for the fastest marathon in orbit. American astronaut Sunita Williams ran the Boston Marathon from space in 2007 in 4:24.

Reports: Manziel indicted

Johnny Manziel was indicted by a Dallas County grand jury on a misdemeanor assault charge, according to multiple reports. The formal announcement is expected to come Monday. Manziel’s case was heard by a grand jury Thursday. Manziel, a former Cleveland Browns quarterback and Heisman Trophy winner at Texas A&M, is accused of hitting his ex-girlfriend Colleen Crowley so hard that she temporarily lost hearing in one ear.

Documents sell for $3.26m

A group of documents from 1857 that set down some of the fundamental rules of baseball, titled “Laws of Base Ball,’’ was acquired at auction by an unidentified buyer for $3.26 million, making it one of the highest-priced pieces of sports memorabilia. “Laws,’’ which was written by Daniel Adams, established rules such as nine men on a side, 90-foot base paths, and nine innings to a game . . . Hall of Fame pitcher Don Drysdale’s 1963 World Series championship ring with the Dodgers sold to an anonymous buyer for $110,111 in an auction of the late pitcher's memorabilia Saturday. Drysdale's 1962 Cy Young Award as the National League’s top pitcher sold for $100,100.

. . . The White Sox placed catcher Alex Avila on the 15-day disabled list after he injured his hamstring running the bases Saturday. Avila is batting .214 in 10 games. Chicago recalled catcher Kevan Smith from Triple A Charlotte.

Lecavalier, 36, set to retire

Vincent Lecavalier intends to retire this summer, ending his 17-year NHL career after one last revitalizing season with the Kings. Lecavalier confirmed his long-stated plans as the Kings left their training complex in El Segundo, Calif. Their season ended Friday with a five-game loss to the San Jose Sharks in the first round of the playoffs. The 36-year-old forward recorded 949 points and won the Stanley Cup in 2004 during a career that began with the Tampa Bay Lightning, who made him the No. 1 pick in the 1998 draft.

He is Tampa Bay’s career leader in goals (383) and games (1,037).

Wondolowski lifts San Jose

Chris Wondolowski scored on a penalty kick and David Bingham had five saves to help the host San Jose Earthquakes beat Sporting Kansas City, 1-0, in MLS . . . Bradley Wright-Phillips got his first two goals of the season to lead the New York Red Bulls to a 3-2 win over host Orlando City SC . . . Connor Wickham headed Crystal Palace into the FA Cup final for the first time in 26 years as his team beat Watford, 2-1, at Wembley Stadium in London. Crystal Palace will meet Manchester United on May 21 in a repeat of the 1990 final, which United won after a replay . . . Leicester winger Riyad Mahrez became the first African to be named English player of the year, straight after the Algerian helped his team take a 4-0 win over Swansea and move closer to its first Premier League title.

Nadal nets 9th Barcelona title

Rafael Nadal beat defending champion Kei Nishikori, 6-4, 7-5, to win the Barcelona Open for the ninth time, equaling Guillermo Vilas's record of 49 career clay-court titles . . . The Nastase Tiriac Trophy final between unseeded Lucas Pouille and Fernando Verdasco was postponed because of rain in Bucharest, Romania . . . Angelique Kerber defended her Porsche Grand Prix title with a 6-4, 6-0 win over qualifier Laura Siegemund in Stuttgart, Germany.

Jones wins in his UFC return

Jon Jones unanimously outpointed Ovince Saint Preux on Saturday night at UFC 197 to take the interim light heavyweight title in his return to the octagon in Las Vegas. On probation for a previous hit-and-run crash in New Mexico, Jones had been stripped of the title. Jones improved to 22-2 and will next face ­Daniel Cormier to unify the title . . . Simon Pagenaud­ led most of the way and overcame late contact with Graham Rahal to win at Barber Motorsports Park in Birmingham, Ala., for his second straight IndyCar victory.

. . . Dutch cyclist Wout Poels attacked near the end and held off Swiss veteran Michael Albasini to take the Liege-Bastogne-Liege classic in Belgium, the biggest win of his career . . . John Velazquez rode both winners of the $100,000 stakes for 3-year-olds at Aqueduct in New York. Overall, Velazquez­ had three wins on closing day at the track. The two stakes were captured by identical 1¼-length margins.
