SCORE: Red Sox 4, Rays 3
RECORD: 2-0
BREAKDOWN: The Sox scored three runs in the first inning off Jake Faria. Rafael Devers and Brock Holt had RBI doubles. Nine Sox pitchers held the Rays to five hits and struck out 10 with only three walks.
THUMBS UP: Roenis Elias retired all six hitters he faced on 29 pitches. The lefthander has been largely a forgotten man since being acquired from Seattle before the 2016 season but is in the mix to be the fifth starter if Steven Wright isn’t ready . . . Jackie Bradley Jr. was 2 for 3 with a double and a run.
THUMBS DOWN: The Sox committed four errors, which had manager Alex Cora shaking his head afterward. Devers threw away a double play ball in the third inning when he failed to set his feet.
MEDICAL REPORT: Lefthander Eduardo Rodriguez, who is coming off knee surgery, has made good progress in recent days and will start to get on the mound this coming week.
AROUND THE BASES: Cora was asked about the streaky offensive history of Bradley. He suggested that it might be wise to give Bradley a day off when he’s on a hot streak to avoid wearing him down, a possible precursor to a slump. That was the strategy Houston employed with Jose Aluve last season. “I’m a big Jackie Bradley Jr. fan. I love talking about Jackie. I know what he can bring,’’ Cora said . . . Eduardo Nunez went through an individual workout before the game. Because he rehabbed his injured right knee much of the winter, he needs some work before being game ready. There is ample time to prepare Nunez for the season.
NEXT GAME: The Sox host the Baltimore Orioles on Sunday at 1:05 p.m. The game will be on NESN and WEEI-FM. Brian Johnson, Joe Kelly, Matt Barnes, Carson Smith, and Robby Scott are scheduled to pitch.
