History has proved a harsh judge of Carter Doctrine

Andrew Bacevich’s“War and culture, American style’’ is consistent with his excellent writing. History is a harsh judge. Jimmy Carter receives well-deserved kudos for his role in the Camp David Accords, which led to peace between Israel and Egypt. Nonetheless, President Carter succumbed to the cultural forces that Bacevich describes so well and opted for the doctrine that bears his name, the Carter Doctrine. The desire for power prevailed over Carter’s better insincts, and the result was interminable war in the Middle East.
