Red Sox spring training report

SCORE: Red Sox 8, Twins 7

RECORD: 1-1

BREAKDOWN: The Twins took a 7-2 lead in the fourth inning before the Sox scored six times for the victory. The winning run came in the eighth inning. Deven Marrero led off with an opposite-field double and went to third when Sam Travis grounded out. One batter later, Brian Bogusevic singled to left field. 

THUMBS UP: The last five Red Sox relievers — Joe Kelly, Robbie Ross Jr., Heath Hembree, Edgar Olmos, and Austin Maddox — combined for five scoreless innings . . . Mookie Betts was 2 for 3 with a double. 

THUMBS DOWN: Tyler Thornburg started the third inning and could not finish it, giving up five runs on four hits and a walk. The righthander put 12 men on base and allowed six earned runs over 5⅔ innings in spring training last season then had the best season of his career. “I pretty much do the same thing every year. It always takes a good 5-6 outings to start getting locked in,’’ Thornburg said.

MEDICAL REPORT: Allen Craig has been hit by pitches three times in the last two days. He was hit twice by the Twins, including a glancing shot off his helmet in the eighth inning. “I know he’s not real pleased right now. That was kind of a scary one, any time you’re up around the head,’’ manager John Farrell. “Other then being irritated by it, physically he’s fine.’’

AROUND THE BASES: Worcester native and former Merrimack College player Ryan O’Rourke worked a scoreless inning for the Twins. The 28-year-old lefthander appeared in 26 games for Minnesota last season . . . The game drew a sellout crowd of 9,882 but lasted 3:22 . . . The game was the first of six between the teams. The Twins train six miles away in Fort Myers.

NEXT GAME: The Red Sox play their first road game of the spring on Sunday, a 1:05 p.m. start against Tampa Bay at Port Charlotte. Newly acquired righthander Hector Velazquez will oppose RHP Chris Archer.
