Jurors cleared NBA star Derrick Rose and two friends Wednesday in a $21.5 million lawsuit that accused them of gang raping his ex-girlfriend when she was incapacitated from drugs or alcohol. The Los Angeles jury reached the verdict in federal court after hearing dramatically different accounts of the August 2013 sexual encounter. Rose, 28, in a released statement to the Associated Press, said he was thankful the jury rejected the lawsuit. ‘‘I am thankful the jury understood and agreed with me,’’ his statement said. ‘‘This experience and my sensitivity to it was deep. I am ready to put this behind me and focus on my family and career.’’ Neither side denied the three men had sex with the woman, but the issue was whether she consented or was too intoxicated to do so. Rose’s lawyer, Mark Baute, said the future of the Knicks point guard and his whole family was at stake because of a morals clause in his player contract and an endorsement deal with Adidas.
Rose was traded to New York this year after spending seven seasons in his native Chicago, where he won Rookie of the Year honors with the Bulls and was the youngest player to be awarded MVP in 2011.
He has been plagued with knee injuries the past few seasons and is in the final year of a five-year deal that will pay him $21.3 million.

Colleges Harvard 2nd in Ivy pollComing off their first losing season since 2007, Harvard was picked to finish second in the Ivy League preseason basketball poll behind Princeton, which topped the rankings for the first time since 2012. “We’re very young,’’ said Harvard coach Tommy Amaker, who will welcome four-star recruits in point guard Bryce Aiken and forward Chris Lewis among his talented class of seven freshmen newcomers. “The main part about having any freshmen . . . is that they’re willing to fit in and they’re going to work hard and our kids have done exactly that.’’ The Crimson will be led by a quartet of seniors in guards Siyani Chambers, who missed all of last season with a torn ACL, Corbin Miller, and Matt Fraschilla, and forward Zena Edosomwan.
