FALL RIVER — A man died after a two-alarm blaze ripped through his Covel Street apartment here early Sunday morning, fire officials said.
Emile Saucier, 61, was found in the three-decker where he lived, according to the Bristol district attorney’s office. He was pronounced dead at Charlton Memorial Hospital.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation, though it appears it might have been accidental, according to the state fire marshal’s office.
Fire crews responded to the scene around 6:10 a.m., acting fire chief John Lynch said. The fire was under control in less than an hour. Three other occupants in the building were able to escape uninjured.
Tenants reported hearing the fire alarm go off on the third floor around midnight, but it went quiet soon after, Lynch said. The tenants called the fire department when they heard the alarm go off again around 6 a.m.
On Sunday evening, workers were at the light-gray building boarding up windows, removing debris, and attending to the roof. Family members of people who lived there declined to comment.
