A Newton hotel that closed Monday night when a water pipe burst remained closed Tuesday, officials said.

The building was without power and there was still water to clean up, Lieutenant Eric Fricke, a spokesman for the Newton Fire Department, said Tuesday.

“There is a lot of work to do,’’ Fricke said. “I’d be surprised if they were open tomorrow.’’

About 250 guests of the Crowne Plaza hotel were ushered off the property Monday night and into the cold after a pipe burst in the building’s basement, releasing a cascade of water.

Officials from the Newton Fire Department responded to the hotel, which straddles the Massachusetts Turnpike, for a “major water leak’’ just after 9:30 p.m.

Guests were first called to the hotel’s ballroom after the pipe gave way, and were later evacuated when the basement filled up with 4 feet of water, officials said.

“It began filling the basement at a rapid rate,’’ Fricke said.

The pipe burst was weather-related.

“It began to encroach on the electrical panels in the basement, which is why we had the hotel evacuated,’’ Fricke said.

Joe Pesaturo, a spokesman for the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority, said T buses were dispatched to the hotel to relocate guests to another location.
