Casino mogul Steve Wynn has been listed as a potential government witness in the federal trial of three people accused of trying to hide a Mafia associate’s ownership in a parcel of land in Everett that Wynn later bought to build a casino.

Charles A. Lightbody, a convicted felon and reputed New England Mafia associate, had a 12 percent financial interest in the Everett land where Wynn plans to build Wynn Boston Harbor, a hotel, resort and casino. Wynn had signed a deal to pay the landowners $75 million for the site until authorities learned of Lightbody’s ownership stake.

Ultimately, Wynn paid $35 million for the parcel.?

According to a federal indictment, state laws governing the Massachusetts casino industry prohibit convicted felons from gaining any financial benefit from the operation of a casino. Federal prosecutors allege that Lightbody became aware of that restriction, and that he and two codefendants redrafted property and bank records to make it appear as if Lightbody did not have a financial interest.

The state Gaming Commission and Wynn are considered to be victims in the case, according to the indictment. Jury selection in the case is scheduled to begin Monday.
