Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt are done.
The 41-year-old actress who’s one half of the glamorous Hollywood couple known as “‘Brangelina’’ cited ‘‘irreconcilable difference’’ in divorce papers filed Monday in Los Angeles (and first reported Tuesday by — who else — TMZ). She’s seeking physical custody of the couple’s six children, with visitation rights for Pitt.
An attorney for Jolie, Robert Offer, said the actress’s decision to divorce was made ‘‘for the health of the family.’’ The filing dated the couple’s separation to last Thursday.
‘‘I am very saddened by this, but what matters most now is the well-being of our kids. I kindly ask the press to give them the space they deserve during this challenging time,’’ Pitt said in a statement to People.com.
Initial reports Tuesday said the problem wasn’t another man — or woman — but Pitt’s parenting style. Jolie, according to a TMZ source, was “extremely upset with his methods.’’ But The New York Post later reported there may indeed have been another woman — Marion Cotillard, the French actress with whom Pitt spent several months shooting “Allied,’’ a World War II drama due in November.
According to the Post, Jolie hired a private detective who discovered that Pitt and Cotillard were getting cozy on the set, and the actor had been “in the throes of some insane midlife crisis’’ that included “hard drugs and Russian hookers.’’
Jolie and Pitt, married since August 2014, have been together since costarring in the film “Mr. & Mrs. Smith’’ in 2004. Pitt, who’s 52, was previously married to actress Jennifer Aniston. Jolie was married twice before, to Jonny Lee Miller and Billy Bob Thornton.
The pair adopted children from Cambodia, Vietnam, and Ethiopia, and in 2006 they created the Jolie-Pitt Foundation, a nonprofit that supported a variety of humanitarian causes. Jolie also is an outspoken advocate for breast cancer treatment after undergoing a double mastectomy.
The actress is apparently being represented by high-powered Hollywood lawyer Laura Wasser, who also repped her in her divorce from Thornton. Wasser has a long list of celebrity clients, including Drew Barrymore (in her split from BU grad Will Kopelman); Jennifer Garner (in her still-pending divorce from Ben Affleck); Kennedy cousin Maria Shriver (in her divorce from Arnold Schwarzenegger); and Kim Kardashian (in her split with Celtics short-timer Kris Humphries). Most recently, Wasser repped “Black Mass’’ star Johnny Depp in his acrimonious divorce with Amber Heard.
It’s not clear if the couple had a prenuptial agreement, but each sure has a lot of money. Jolie doesn’t work as much as she once did — she made five movies in 2004 and appeared in just one in 2015 — but she still has an estimated net worth of $160 million, earning $15 million last year alone, according to Forbes. Pitt, meanwhile, earned $31.5 in 2015, according to Forbes. Interestingly, in “By the Sea,’’ the last movie they made together — and which Jolie wrote and directed — the pair play a wealthy discontented couple.
