In a matchup of Bay State Conference unbeatens, the Braintree High girls’ basketball team held a slim 2-point lead on Wellesley at the start of the fourth quarter on Friday night at Wellesley.
But the top-ranked Wamps pulled away in the final eight minutes to pull out a gritty 41-33 win.
“I’m actually surprised either of us scored even 33 or 41 points because we knew this was going to be an absolute defensive battle and it didn’t let down,’’ said Braintree coach Kristen McDonnell. “[Wellesley is] an amazing team, they’re incredibly well-coached, they have it all. They have 3-point shooters, they slash, they rebound.
“I almost wish we had another game with them to get us ready for the [state] tournament because they’re just a really impressive team.’’
Sophomore guard Jenna Roche led the Wamps (10-0) with 11 points and junior Keelah Dixon added 10 from the backcourt. Junior captain Dorian Cohen had a game-high 12 for seventh-ranked Wellesley (11-1).
Dixon scored the first point of the fourth quarter after drawing a foul and converting one of two free throws.
“She’s tough, she’s just such a competitor,’’ McDonnell said of Dixon. “If the game’s close then we always want the ball in her hands. Every play we devised was to get her the ball and she was playing all different positions on the court to do that, so I give her a lot of credit.’’
Captain Brianna Herlihy finished with 10 after sitting most of the first quarter with two fouls.
“She’s always seems to do something for us,’’ McDonnell said of Herlihy. “She’s battling a lot of back pain right now, so I think as the game got closer towards the end of the game she just didn’t care about the pain anymore and got done what we needed to.’’
Braintree built a 27-20 cushion at halftime, but the Raiders opened the third quarter with a 7-0 run.
“The big thing for us, when it’s a close game like this against a very good team, it’s just possession to possession and all those little things,’’ McDonnell said.
“We talked about it before the game, it’s the 50-50 balls, it’s boxing out, it’s making the right passes and those were the things we just talked about and to just have a good time. I think players can get so tight in those situations so we try to keep them a little calm and make them laugh.’’
