Barnstable volleyball No. 1

It feels as if just taking a set against the Barnstable girls’ volleyball team should be counted as a win nowadays.

The top-ranked Red Raiders continued their dominant run through the regular season, sweeping No. 5 Andover in three sets — 25-13, 25-17, 25-12 — at Andover High School on Tuesday night. The win continues a dominant run for the Red Raiders (15-0), who have won 45 of 46 sets this season, including 36 straight.

“We schedule as challenging a schedule as possible,’’ said Barnstable head coach Tom Turco. “It prepares you. You run a risk of high competition and that prepares you for the run during the tournament.’’

The Red Raiders dominated from the start, riding a strong serving performance to a 10-3 lead before taking the first set, 25-13. The Golden Warriors (13-2) made a run in the second set to cut a 20-13 deficit to 22-17, but couldn’t muster another point. The Red Raiders finished off the sweep with a strong defensive performance in the third set, holding Andover without an ace from the service line for the first time all season.

“We had to minimize second-chance points because you’re not going to beat a team like Barnstable when you give them two or three chances to finish off a rally,’’ said Andover head coach Jane Bergin. “We needed to dictate the pace of play, and they did that. You won’t win a match against anyone when you only serve the ball 44 times.’’

Junior outside hitter Riley James led the way offensively for the Red Raiders, finishing the night with 20 kills, nine digs and three aces. Classmate Ingrid Murphy added 16 kills and nine digs of her own and senior setter Caroline Brodt dished out 30 assists to go with 13 digs.

Junior Alexis Mancha paced Andover with four kills and five assists and senior Sarah Shattuck led the team with six kills.

Andover still controls its own destiny in seeking another Merrimack Valley Conference title, while Barnstable will have a tough run to finish off an undefeated regular season with upcoming matches against No. 10 Medfield, Westborough, and No. 2 Duxbury.

“I don’t have expectations,’’ said Turco. “They have expectations for themselves. The only pressure they feel is pressure they put on themselves. I think that’s a pretty healthy, competitive attitude.’’
