When chef Jody Adams announced in April that she was leaving Rialto in June, it was reported that the restaurant would continue to operate under the leadership of David Ladner, who was promoted from chef de cuisine to executive chef. Then came the news earlier this week that the revered Cambridge restaurant would be closing down this month.
Ladner confirmed to the Globe that he is not taking over. After Rialto closes its doors at the Charles Hotel, he’ll be done, too. In fact, he’s leaving town, and moving to New York on June 25.
“I’m not going to take over Rialto,’’ Ladner wrote in a Facebook message to the Globe. “The timing just didn’t work out, my family and I have been planning on moving to Long Island for a while now. I think that hotel has plans for another chef to take over the space.’’
That is indeed what’s happening: Rialto will be replaced by a completely new restaurant and chef.
“After 22 years, Rialto will close its doors on June 22,’’ Adams said in a statement to the Globe. “I want to invite friends and guests to come enjoy Rialto one last time with me over the next several weeks. I have so much gratitude to our friends, neighbors and staff who have supported us and made Rialto so special over the past two decades. Both the hotel and I have offered our staff positions within the hotel and my other restaurants to ensure that they have a place to land. Rialto will close and reopen with a new chef and concept in the near future. I am looking forward to opening a new restaurant with my Trade partners in the Back Bay this summer.’’
So what will become of the space after Rialto closes? That remains to be seen. We couldn’t get any answers from the Charles Hotel. “We have no comment at this time, thank you for reaching out,’’ said Alex Attia, general manager of the hotel.
