Alex Ovechkin became the third player in NHL history to score 30 goals in each of his first 11 seasons and Braden Holtby made 33 saves as the Capitals beat the Philadelphia Flyers, 3-2, Sunday afternoon in Washington.
Ovechkin joined Wayne Gretzky and Mike Gartner in the record books and moved within two goals of Chicago’s Patrick Kane for the league lead. Dmitry Orlov and Matt Niskanen also scored for Washington.
Holtby was stellar in net, especially on the penalty kill, as he improved to 3-0-0 in the second half of back-to-back starts this season. It didn’t matter that Washington went 0 for 2 on the power play to extend its season-worst drought to 0 for 17.
Michael Del Zotto and Nick Schultz scored for Philadelphia.
Ovechkin reached 30 in his 49th game of the season, redirecting Karl Alzner’s point shot past Steve Mason at 15:56 of the second period to tie the score. Just 1:09 later, Orlov went right around Flyers forward Brayden Schenn and snapped a shot home to give the Capitals the lead.
Canadiens 2, Hurricanes 1 — Sven Andrighetto was the only player to score in a five-round shootout, leading Montreal past visiting Carolina.
Ben Scrivens stopped all five Carolina shooters, including Eric Staal on the final attempt, to secure the win.
Max Pacioretty scored in regulation for Montreal, which swept a pair of weekend afternoon games after beating Edmonton, 5-1, on Saturday.
Jeff Skinner scored for Carolina.
Islanders 8, Oilers 1 — Kyle Okposo scored a hat trick as New York rolled over visiting Edmonton.
Johnny Boychuck, John Tavares, and Nikolay Kulemin scored in the opening period, chasing former Islanders netminder Anders Nilsson, who was replaced after Kulemin’s goal by former Ranger Cam Talbot.
Okposo made it 4-0 at 2:32 of the second, then scored again at 6:09 of the middle period.
