Garrisson Duvivier put together a freshman season to remember for the men’s basketball team at Gordon College. The 6-foot-6 forward from Brockton garnered Rookie of the Year honors in the Commonwealth Coast Conference after pacing the Fighting Scots (12-14) in scoring.
Duvivier was a double-double machine, posting a conference-best 14 doubles in 26 games. He registered a season-high 34 points against Nichols (with 11 rebounds) and a season-best 16 rebounds (along with 27 points) against Eastern Nazarene. Tabbed the conference’s Player of the Week three times, he finished third in the conference in field goal percentage (51.8 percent) and rebounds (10.1 rpg). He also ranked fourth in blocks per game (1.3).
As a senior captain at Brockton High, Duvivier played alongside his younger brother, Jonathan, a senior combo guard for the Boxers.
Q. How did your freshman season unfold?
A. We lost in the first round of the CCC playoffs ( 81-72 to Wentworth), but I’m happy with what I learned and how we came together as a team. A lot of people thought it would be a transition year because we lost a lot of seniors last year. But we had some freshmen rise up and fill the void very well.
Q. Your thoughts on your selection as Rookie of the Year?
A. I wasn’t surprised, because I set a goal to do as well as I could. I was happy to get the award. I worked hard in the summer to be ready, but still see a lot of ways I can improve.
Q. Such as?
A. I want to be able to stay on the floor longer (Duvivier averaged a team-leading 26.2 minutes per game), The other top players in the conference didn’t rest all that much during games. I think I should be able to do that too. That and just better decision-making and maintaining a high intensity level all the time.
Q. How do you generate most of your offense?
A. Usually if the opponent is smaller I’ll post up, but I usually drive or finish with contact and get to the free throw line. I didn’t shoot any threes this season. I did in high school, but coming into the season I didn’t feel too confident in shooting the three, so I focused on where I could immediately help the team.
Q. Do you have a favorite NBA player?
A. Dwyane Wade. I just like the way he plays. He’s very aggressive and always looking to see how to help out his teammates. I started following him back in 2006 when he was coming up in the league.
Q. Do you have a role model or mentor?
A. Probably my older cousin, Carl Sidney. He’s just always been there for me and my brother. We’re close to him and he’d always bring us to the gym or take us out to a movie and give us advice. He went to UMass-Boston and has always been very helpful.
Q. Where is the team hangout?
A. We like to go to the North Shore Mall after practice. We walk around and we like to go to dinner at Chick-fil-A.
Q. Favorite movie?
A. I really like the Dark Knight trilogy. I can watch either of the three at any time. I think I like them because of all the cool gadgets that Batman uses. Heath Ledger as the Joker is sensational. So I guess the first one is my favorite.
Q. What do you like to do when you’re not playing basketball?
A. I’m involved in a community service program where we go to Lynn and work with a group of kids in an afterschool program. We just help out and organize games and activities for third and fourth graders. I like working with kids. After my junior year of high school I worked in a program with Brockton middle school kids for the summer.
