Former Red Sox pitcher Josh Beckett was arrested early Saturday after charging the stage and tackling a country singer at an open mic night at a Texas country music club Friday night, TMZ Sports reported. Beckett, who pitched in Boston from 2006-12, was arrested for public intoxication. His lawyer told TMZ the pitcher claimed it was an act of horseplay and didn’t mean to hurt the singer. Beckett has apologized since the incident, and is trying to do what he can to make amends, his lawyer said. The singer told police he suffered serious injuries to his arm, neck, and shoulder, including a torn rotator cuff and dislocated shoulder. The incident is under investigation . . . Highly touted Japanese pitcher-outfielder Shohei Otani announced he wants to move to Major League Baseball next season. Otani’s Japanese club, the Nippon Ham Fighters, said Friday they will allow Otani to use the posting system this offseason, clearing the way for him to sign with a major league team.

UCLA players to stay in China
UCLA freshmen LiAngelo Ball, Jalen Hill, and Cody Riley, arrested on shoplifting charges in Hangzhou, China, did not return to Los Angeles with the rest of the basketball team Saturday night, a person with knowledge of the situation told the Associated Press. ESPN reported the players could be in Hangzhou for ‘‘a week or two’’ while the situation is resolved. The source told ESPN there is surveillance footage of the players shoplifting from three stores inside a high-end retail center. No. 21 UCLA won its season-opening game, 63-60, over Georgia Tech in Shanghai. The trio was questioned by police about allegedly stealing from a Louis Vuitton store next to the team’s hotel in Hangzhou last week, where the Bruins visited before leaving for Shanghai . . . Former Providence College hockey player Drew Brown, 25, died after a long battle with cancer. He played for the Friars from 2011-14, appearing in 75 games and totaling 10 goals and 22 assists. Brown was diagnosed with Ewing’s Sarcoma, a rare form of bone cancer, and missed the 2014-15 season, which ended with the Friars winning their first national title.

Chiefs DT Miller arrested
Kansas City Chiefs defensive tackle Roy Miller was arrested in Florida on a domestic battery charge, according to Duval County jail records. Miller was jailed shortly before 5 a.m. Saturday by the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office. The incident involved a minor injury, but no other details were available about the alleged battery. The Chiefs, who are off this week, said they were aware of the incident.

Shiffrin loses in slalom
Slovakian skier Petra Vlhova beat Olympic and world champion Mikaela Shiffrin to win the first women's World Cup slalom of the season. Vlhova trailed Shiffrin by 0.21 seconds after the opening leg and used a near-perfect second run to edge Shiffrin by 0.10 . . . Evgenia Medvedeva of Russia won the women’s figure skating competition at the NHK Trophy in Osaka, Japan. Russia also won the men's event with Sergei Voronov holding on to his lead from the short program. Adam Rippon of the United States was second and Alexei Bychenko of Israel third.
. . . Russia’s hockey came back from a two-goal deficit to beat the United States, 5-2, at the Deutschland Cup in Ausburg, Germany.
The US team is made up largely of professionals playing in Europe, though college players such as Boston University’s Jordan Greenway and the University of Denver’s Troy Terry are good bets to play at the Olympics.
