Why read books when so many are being made into TV shows? Just kidding. But a number of book adaptations are doing quite well on TV — think “Game of Thrones’’ and “Outlander’’ — and so more are on the way, of course. Here’s a selected list:

“American Gods,’’ adapted by Bryan Fuller of “Hannibal,’’ will be coming to Starz next year. Based on the book by Neil Gaiman about old deities who still exist but are pretending to be ordinary citizens, it will star Ricky Whittle, Ian McShane, Pablo Schreiber, Cloris Leachman, Crispin Glover, Jeremy Davies, and one-time local boy Jonathan Tucker.

“Big Little Lies’’ will be coming to HBO. Based on the book by Liane Moriarty, the limited series has a promising cast featuring Nicole Kidman, Reese Witherspoon, Alexander Skarsgard, Zoe Kravitz, Adam Scott, and Laura Dern. It’s due next year.

“Sharp Objects’’ is by Gillian Flynn, whose “Gone Girl’’ became a sensation. About a reporter who leaves a mental hospital to cover a murder, the HBO series will star Amy Adams. No date announced yet.

“Super Sad True Love Story,’’ a satiric novel by Gary Shteyngart, is coming to Showtime. Ben Stiller will direct and executive produce the as-yet unscheduled series.

“A Series of Unfortunate Events,’’ based on the books by Lemony Snicket, a.k.a. Daniel Handler, is coming to Netflix in January. The first season will have eight episodes, and the stars include Neil Patrick Harris, Joan Cusack, Aasif Mandvi, Bernadette Peters, and Patrick Warburton.

“His Dark Materials,’’ a fantasy series based on the books by Philip Pullman that include parallel universes and witches, is coming to the BBC and, presumably, BBC America. Look for it next year or in 2018. No cast members have been announced yet.

“Brave New World’’ — perhaps you’ve heard of Aldous Huxley’s 1932 dystopian novel? — is coming to Syfy. Interestingly, one of the adapters is popular comics writer Grant Morrison.
