The third-ranked Boston College hockey team received goals from Colin White, David Cotton, and Chris Calnan in a 3-1 victory over Arizona State on Sunday at Conte Forum. Ryan Fitzgerald assisted on two goals for the Eagles (10-2-1), who took a 1-0 lead on White’s power-play goal at 1:44 of the first period. Arizona State (2-9), playing BC for the first time, tied it on Jordan Masters’s goal later in the first period before Cotton and Calnan scored second- and third-period goals to seal the victory . . . Northeastern and No. 9 Notre Dame played 40 minutes of scoreless hockey at Matthews Arena before a Zamboni malfunction caused damage to the ice during the second intermission, forcing the officials to suspend the game. The teams will attempt to make up the third period later in the season at a date to be determined, if scheduling allows. The delay began during the second intermission when one of the Northeastern Zambonis broke down in the left corner of the ice, making that portion of the ice unable to freeze. The ice was deemed unplayable and the game was suspended . . . Defenseman Dylan Zink assisted on three goals as UMass Lowell (7-3-2, 3-1-0) posted a 4-1 Hockey East victory against visiting Maine (4-6-2, 1-3-0). The River Hawks received goals from Ryan Lohin, John Edwardh,Joe Gambardella, and Jake Kamrass. Dane Gibson scored for Maine . . . Merrimack (4-5-3, 0-2-2 Hockey East) and host New Hampshire (4-5-2, 2-1-1) skated to a 3-3 tie. Mike McNicholas scored twice for the Wildcats.

Champions Tour wraps up

Paul Goydos and Bernhard Langer got the big trophies and checks in the Champions’ season-ending Charles Schwab Cup Championship in Scottsdale, Ariz. Goydos completed a wire-to-wire victory in the tournament with a 4-under-par 66, and Langer (64) finished second to win his third straight season points title and fourth overall . . . Pat Perez won the PGA Tour’s OHL Classic in Playa del Carmen, Mexico, in his third start since returning from shoulder surgery. Perez closed with a 4-under 67 for a two-stroke victory over third-round leader Gary Woodland (70) . . . Alex Noren won the Nedbank Golf Challenge with the round of his life in Sun City, South Africa, a 9-under 63 that took him from six shots off the lead overnight to a six-shot victory and his fourth title on the European Tour. Noren was 9 under through the first 11 holes on the way to matching the best final round by a winner on this year’s tour. Noren finished 14 under overall . . . Carlota Ciganda rallied to win the Citibanamex Lorena Ochoa Invitational in Mexico City for her second LPGA victory in four starts. The 26-year-old Spaniard shot a 4-under 68 for a two-stroke victory over six players.

Third-round leader Austin Ernst had a 71 to drop into a tie for second with 2008 winner Angela Stanford (69), Jodi Ewart Shadoff (67), Karine Icher (69), and Sarah Jane Smith (70).

Gurriel, Jays agree to a deal

Lourdes Gurriel Jr., 23, the younger brother of Astros infielder Yulieski Gurriel, agreed to a $22 million, seven-year contract with the Blue Jays. Gurriel, a shortstop and center fielder, hit .344 with 10 homers in 59 games in 2015, the last of his six seasons in Cuba's Serie Nacional. Gurriel became a free agent in August. Yulieski, 32, agreed to a $47.5 million, five-year contract in July . . . Outfielder Chris Heisey agreed to $1.4 million, one-year deal to return to the Nationals. Heisey, 31, hit nine homers and slugged .446 in 139 at-bats last season.

Righthander Jesse Chavez can earn up to $2.5 million in bonuses based on starts in his new $5.75 million deal with the Angels. He would earn $100,000 each for 10, 12 and 14 starts, $150,000 apiece for 16 and 18, $200,000 for 20, $250,000 apiece for 22 and 24, $300,000 for 26, $400,000 for 28, and $500,000 for 30. Chavez. 33, went 2-2 with a 4.43 ERA in 62 games last season for the Blue Jays and Dodgers.

McGregor wins 2nd crown

Conor McGregor knocked out Eddie Alvarez in the second round to win the UFC lightweight title and become the first two-class champion in the promotion’s history. McGregor dominated from the opening bell of the main event of UFC 205 at Madison Square Garden in New York on Saturday night and the sold-out crowd roared with each blow. McGregor is now the reigning featherweight and lightweight champ. UFC has not decided if McGregor will be allowed to defend both championships. UFC stacked the card with three title fights that were expected to help set a gate record of more than $17 million at MSG. The 1999 boxing match between Lennox Lewis and Evander Holyfield drew a record $13.5 million.In other bouts, Tyron Woodley defeated Stephen Thompson via majority draw to retain his welterweight title, and Joanna Jedrzejczyk successfully defended her UFC women’s strawweight championship with a unanimous decision win over Karolina Kowalkiewicz.

US women undefeated in ’16

Crystal Dunn, Christen Press, Morgan Brian, and Samantha Mewis scored to help the US women’s soccer team beat Romania, 5-0, in Carson, Calif., in its final game of the year. The Americans finished the year 22-0-3, scoring 92 goals and conceding 10 . . . Goalkeeper Tim Howard did not travel with the US men for Tuesday night’s World Cup soccer qualifier at Costa Rica after injuring the adductor muscle in his right leg. Howard was hurt while making a goal kick in the first half of Friday’s 2-1 loss to Mexico at Columbus, Ohio, and was replaced by Brad Guzan in the 40th minute . . . Knicks guard Brandon Jennings was fined $15,000 by the NBA for his actions toward a referee. The league said that Jennings directed inappropriate language toward the official and failed to leave the court in a timely manner during the team’s 118-87 loss to the Celtics on Friday at TD Garden . . . Isaiah Briscoe and De'Aaron Fox each scored 21 points as the No. 2 Kentucky men’s basketball team (2-0) defeated visiting Canisius, 93-69 . . . Freshman Destiny Slocum scored 15 points and Shatori Walker-Kimbrough added 14 as the No. 6 Maryland women’s basketball team opened the season with a 100-44 victory over UMass Lowell, in College Park, Md. Nicole Hayner led UMass Lowell (0-2) with 17 points . . . Novak Djokovic won his opening match at the ATP finals in London, rallying to beat Dominic Thiem, 6-7 (10-12), 6-0, 6-2. The second-ranked Serb, who has a chance to reclaim the No. 1 ranking at the O2 Arena next weekend, won nine of 10 games after losing the first set in a tiebreaker . . . It took Austria’s Marcel Hirscher just two races to get back to where he finished each of the past five seasons — on top of the men’s World Cup overall standings. Hirscher overcame an illness on the eve of the slalom opener in Levi, Finland, to lead teammate Michael Matt for an Austrian 1-2 finish.

Three-time series champion Lewis Hamilton won the rain-delayed Brazilian Grand Prix in Sao Paulo, forcing a showdown for the season title with Mercedes teammate Nico Rosberg in Abu Dhabi in the finale in two weeks. The race was stopped by two crashes in driving rain during the first 28 of 71 laps.
