N. Shore college teams with Uber to aid commuters

North Shore Community College and Uber will launch a pilot program on Sept. 6 to offer reduced-fare rides for students traveling to its Danvers campus from the commuter rail station in Beverly and Northshore Mall in Peabody.

The program covers the first $10 of an Uber ride between the Danvers campus and the Beverly Depot and MBTA buses that stop at the mall. Rides that do not end at the specified locations will not be eligible for the discount, the college announced in a statement.

The college hopes the program will address its longstanding issue of access to its main campus. Located just off Interstate 95 and Route 1 south in Danvers, the campus is not currently accessible by public transportation.

“We see a constant shuttle of parents and friends and taxi cabs coming to pick people up and drop them off, so we have a significant number of students who cannot get here on their own,’’ said NSCC president Patricia Gentile said in a statement.

Gentile said the school has explored multiple options for students to travel to and from campus, including requests for extensions of MBTA lines. But there was not enough information available to determine student demand. The pilot program will run for one year, the college said.

“We’re hoping this will allow more students to take classes at Danvers,’’ Gentile said. “It will also give us data of how many students are taking public transportation that we can take to the MBTA.’’

Gentile estimated that after the discount, students will pay between $3 and $4 for rides from campus to the Northshore Mall and between $5 and $6 from the campus to Beverly Depot.

“Because there is no set fee for Uber, we just decided on $10 because everyone can do that math,’’ Gentile said. “This provided the most flexible service to getting these students from the end of a public transportation line to our campus.’’
