SAN ANTONIO — Friends, family, and colleagues gathered Monday to remember Detective Benjamin Marconi, who was shot to death while sitting in his patrol car.
“We are forever grateful for his watch over us,’’ said Betsy Buhler, police chaplain and media minister at the Community Bible Church in San Antonio, where the detective’s funeral was held.
Marconi, 50, was fatally shot Nov. 20 as he wrote a traffic ticket outside police headquarters. Otis Tyrone McKane, 31, has been charged with capital murder in the attack. McKane said he was angry over a child-custody battle and ‘‘lashed out at somebody who didn’t deserve it.’’
Those who spoke at the service included fellow officers and Marconi’s grown children.
Nearly 24 hours after he allegedly ambushed Marconi but before he was arrested, McKane got married at the Bexar County Courthouse, the San Antonio Express-News reported.
A marriage license was issued to McKane and his wife, Christian Chanel Fields. The two wed in the courthouse while outside law enforcement officials entered day two of their intense search.
