Re “Cheap but charming dates for the financially challenged’’ (Feb. 12): Valentine’s Day and New Year’s are the most overrated times to go out to dinner. Best bet: Cook at home, make popcorn, and watch some excellent classic love stories. Personal faves: “Casablanca,’’ “The English Patient,’’ or “Gone With the Wind.’’

Controversy brews over proposed tower in Brookline
Re “Brookline selectmen ask state to block proposed 21-story Coolidge Corner tower’’ (Feb. 12):
It’s pretty obvious to anyone who’s even seen a picture of Coolidge Corner that that building would be completely out of place there.

What I would love to see when the developers come out with these drawings is what the area looks like currently. What they left out were all the intersection control lights, the rusted tracks , the signs, and overhead train wires.

This structure is hideous and does nothing to enhance this iconic intersection. They should hire a top-flight architect to do something meangingful — and on a much smaller scale to boot.

Hate crime in Newton
Re “Swastikas, ‘offensive posts’ reported at Newton North’’ (Feb. 12):
With all the cameras around today, it is becoming increasingly difficult for these hate-mongers to hide in the shadows of anonymity. Hopefully, the thugs in this case will be caught and dealt with fairly in a court of law.
