One week after running the nation’s fastest 2-mile time (9 minutes, 8.34 seconds) of the high school season, Ryan Oosting returned to the Reggie Lewis Center Saturday afternoon for an encore performance.
In a display of dominance at the New England Track & Field Championships, the Arlington junior bested his previous mark by more than 10 seconds, clocking in at 8:57.59, a personal best and meet record.
Following a smooth mile split of 4:32, Oosting upped the pace and separated himself from the rest of the competition, running the second half of the race seven seconds faster than the first.
“I saw the clock with three laps to go and I knew I had to run like a 1:39 600 [meters] so I knew I was going to have to pick it up in order to break nine [minutes],’’ Oosting said. “I was thinking win before the time but I really wanted to get that sub-9.’’
Other top boys’ performers included Phillips Magre (Somerville), who barely missed the meet record by .07 in his 300 victory (34.24 seconds), and Jason Dolan of Westford Academy, who took first in the 1,000 at 2 minutes, 28 seconds.
On the girls’ side, Medway’s Ava Vasile won the 55-meter hurdles in 8.36 seconds and Seekonk’s Cameron Garabian was the New England champion in the shot put (43 feet, 7¾ inches). Andover won the girls 4 x 200 at 1:43.47 and Wellesley broke the meet record in their 4 x 400 victory at 3 minutes, 53.27 seconds.
Wrestling
Lincoln-Sudbury senior Andrew Marshall won his second straight New England title Saturday at the Providence Career & Technical Academy.
But his 220-pound title came easier than his 195-pound crown as a junior. Marshall rolled through the field before defeating Dakota Grove (Fitch, Conn.) in the semis. Then he registered a first-period pin over Shawsheen’s Omar Eldaly.
In another all-Bay State final, Nashoba’s Lucas Cordio defeated Colby Holland (Danvers), 11-4, for the 160-pound title. At 106 pounds, Melrose’s Hunter Adrian earned a 2-1 overtime win over Joziah Fry (Coventry, R.I.).
The runner-ups included Billerica senior Ryan Higgins (285 pounds), Newton North senior Kyle Randall (113 pounds), and Masconomet junior Jack Darling (120 pounds). Wayland senior Ramazan Attasauov placed second at 132 pounds.
