The Cape Ann Chamber of Commerce has reached its goal of 750 completed applications needed for the start of Cape Ann license plates.

The chamber was waiting until last Friday to collect more applications before submitting them to the Registry of Motor Vehicles.

“We’ve had a big push for the last month using social media, print, chamber contacts, and our board of directors,’’ said Ken Rhiel, chamber CEO. “We’ve had more than 100 applications in the past few weeks, and still have momentum.’’

The specialty plates will celebrate the region while also raising money for community needs. Some proceeds from the $40 special plate fee go to the Cape Ann Community Foundation, a nonprofit that supports regional promotion, economic development, and educational efforts.

The plate design features an iconic image from each of the four Cape Ann communities: Gloucester’s Fisherman at the Wheel; a schooner in full sail for Essex; Rockport’s Motif No. 1; and the rotunda at Tucks Point in Manchester-by-the-Sea.

The chamber’s goal is 3,000 plates sold over the next five years. Rhiel said the chamber received some guidance and support from counterparts in the Cape Cod Chamber of Commerce, which began a Cape & Islands plate campaign approximately 20 years ago that has raised more than $21 million for its communities.

Rhiel said the foundation would receive $28 of the $40 extra fee on initial orders, and 100 percent of future renewal fees for the Cape Ann specialty plate.

“It’s a win-win,’’ Rhiel said. “We can show the love we have for Cape Ann every day, and proceeds go back to the community.’’

Rhiel said the plates will debut in six to eight months, and applicants will be notified directly by mail from the registry. Applications for plates that did not meet the May 13 deadline will not be accepted until the new plates are issued and on the road, at which time they will be available directly from the registry.
