Photographer Don Krohn’s new book, “On Cape Cod,’’ features photographs from across the Cape. Each week in this section we’ll feature one photo from each of the Cape’s 15 towns and Krohn’s descriptions of his work.
Here is the vernacular architecture of Cape Cod, as seen in an 1815 house, located on lovely Route 6A. The design of these old Cape houses, whether “full,’’ “half,’’ or “three-quarter’’ size, was perfectly adapted to the needs of early settlers: economical in design and construction, strong against the elements, and yet easily expanded when needed. In their simplicity lies a Shaker-like beauty, an aesthetic of compact form, well-chosen materials, and careful construction. This house displays some relatively lavish details, like the false columns next to the front door and the small windows above it. The primary colors of the bright yellow storm door and deep red geraniums contrast with the dark weathered cedar shingles.
