With Supreme Court in balance, a spite vote for Trump poses peril

The article“Eventual support of Sanders backers no sure thing for Clinton in bitter race’’ (Page A1, May 18) quotes one Bernie Sanders supporter as preferring to “roll the dice’’ with Donald Trump rather than vote for Hillary Clinton. As a longtime Sanders supporter, I understand his lack of enthusiasm for Clinton, but I am disappointed at this gentleman’s lack of perspective.

One of the most important outcomes of this presidential election will be the composition of the Supreme Court for perhaps the next generation. Given the current 4-4 composition of the court, and what we know of Trump’s views, a vote for him leaves nothing to chance when it comes to our judicial branch. The only uncertainty will be how much of the liberal accomplishments of the past 60 years will be rolled back, including voters’ rights and a woman’s right to choose.

A Sanders supporter voting for Trump would be cutting off the nose to spite the face.
