Dartmouth police officers shot and seriously wounded a 23-year-old man who allegedly charged at them with a knife following an domestic violence incident involving his mother, officials said.

Ryan Kuphal is in “serious but stable condition,’’ according to the office of Bristol District Attorney Thomas M. Quinn III. Officers attempted to use a Taser before the shooting, but the device “was not successful in disabling Kuphal,’’ Quinn’s office said.

Police were called to the Dartmouth Street home around 4 p.m. While officers were on their way, Kuphal allegedly drove off in his mother’s vehicle. Police eventually found him on Bush Street in South Dartmouth, Quinn’s office said.

Gregg Miliote, a spokesman for Quinn, said Kuphal was in the yard of a home when police found him.

Kuphal allegedly “charged at responding officers while armed with a knife.’’ Police first attempted to use the Taser, Quinn’s office said, and an officer shot him once. Kuphal was rushed to Rhode Island Hospital.

Miliote said he did not have information late Sunday about whether Kuphal would be charged in the incident. A person who answered the phone at a number listed for Kuphal declined to comment.

Citing the ongoing investigation, Miliote said he could not reveal how many other officers were involved in the altercation. Police also said they could not discuss the status of the officer involved in the shooting.

Neighbors in the area where the Bush Street incident took place said they were shocked to see violence erupt on what they described as a quiet residential street.

“We don’t have much going on here,’’ said one woman who said she had lived in the area for more than four decades. She said she had seen a police response in the area but wasn’t able to make out what was happening. The woman declined to give her name.

The incident remains under investigation.
