Celebrities from near and far turned to social media to show their appreciation of International Women’s Day on Wednesday. Buckingham Browne & Nichols alum Mindy Kaling tweeted: “Happy #InternationalWomensDay! Tag a strong woman you admire #BeBoldForChange,’’ and Pittsfield native Elizabeth Banks (below) tweeted a photo of herself wearing a T-shirt that created by A.L.C. in honor of International Women’s Day. Proceeds from sales of the shirt will be donated to Planned Parenthood. “Proud to #StandWithPP today on #InternationalWomensDay & every day,’’ she wrote.
Gisele Bundchen shared an Instagram photo in which she expressed her feelings in English and Portuguese. “It’s time to end all forms of discrimination,’’ she wrote. “Let’s support and love one another. Happy Women’s Day for all women around the world!’’ Her hubby, Tom Brady, posted a photo of the ladies in his family with the following caption: “Happy International Women’s Day! I have been beyond blessed to have the most incredible support system and this picture sums it up. To the love of my life, @gisele, my mom, my sisters, my nieces and my little Girlie Girl — thank you for bringing so much love and joy to my life. And thank you for being such great examples of compassion and empathy. The world needs much more of it! I love you all!!’’
Brady’s teammate Martellus Bennett also paid tribute to the holiday on social media, and his brother, Michael Bennett of the Seattle Seahawks, took it a step further by penning a thoughtful essay in the Players’ Tribune: “Why I Stand With the Women’s Strike.’’
“As a black man in America, I sometimes get overwhelmed and discouraged by what I see — from the police killings of unarmed black men, to the unequal educational system, to the mass incarceration of poor people of color in for-profit prisons,’’ Bennett wrote in the Tribune. “But when I look in my daughters’ eyes, I see the courage of Harriet Tubman, the patience of Rosa Parks, the soul of Ida B. Wells, the passion of Fannie Lou Hamer and the heart of Angela Davis. I see the future. I see hope.’’
Author J.K. Rowling shared a bit of snarky trivia with her fans on Twitter: “Happy #InternationalWomensDay or, as it’s often called on here, #WhyIsn’tThereAnInternationalMensDay (There is: November 19th).’’
Adele posted a quote from the late, great Canadian feminist Charlotte Whitton: “Whatever women do they must do twice as well as men to be thought half as good. Luckily, this is not difficult.’’
Madonna shared a black and white portrait of herself with her eyes closed, and wrote: “Dreaming of a World Where Women have Equal Rights.’’
