Latin Academy’s coed swimming team soared to its ninth straight Boston City League championship Thursday at Madison Park.

The Dragons, who have won 25 of the last 26 league titles, were led by senior Jayson Zernitsky, who won the the 200-yard freestyle (2:03.49) and the 100-yard butterfly (1:00.44), and was part of the first place 200-yard freestyle relay team (1:45:81). His performance helped Latin Academy (122) cruise past O’Bryant (99) and East Boston (51).

“I am happy we won for my final year and I’m happy with the way I raced,’’ said Zernitsky.

Zernitsky and many of the other Dragon swimmers are a product of the philosophy established by former coach Mark Thomas and second-year coach Richard Mojica.

“We develop a complete team,’’ Mojica said. “It doesn’t matter if you are a 7th grader, 8th grader, or 9th grader, we get everybody involved.’’

Zernitsky said he and his Latin Academy teammates practice five days a week with Mojica. Before Zernitsky entered high school, he was swimming at the YMCA down the street from Latin Academy.

“We have had numerous years of success and I just come to practice every day prepared,’’ Zernitsky said.

His school placed second, but O’Bryant senior Justin Hung took first place in both the 100-yard breaststroke (1:03.87) and 200-yard individual medley (2:07.37) for the third straight year. He was also a part of the first place 200-yard medley relay (1:56.87) and 400-yard freestyle medley (4:11.90) teams.

A lot of Latin Academy’s top swimmers are 8th and 9th graders, setting the school up for next year to go for its 10th straight City League title.

“We do a great job at reloading. We see the future every year looking real good because we continue to work with the kids and get them involved at an early age,’’ Mojica said. “We don’t just have them sitting on the bench, we have them taking a part in the events themselves.’’
