‘60 Minutes’ segment has a BU connection

Dr. Ann McKee shows Sharyn Alfonsi a brain on “60 Minutes.’’ (60 Minutes)
The VA-BU Concussion Legacy Brain Bank is the focus of a “60 Minutes’’ segment Sunday. But the piece, reported by former WBZ-TV journo Sharyn Alfonsi, isn’t about the degenerative brain disease suffered by pro athletes, like the late Aaron Hernandez, the former Patriots tight end who was found to have severe chronic traumatic encephalopathy.
No, the segment centers on the large number of combat veterans whose proximity to roadside bombs and improvised explosive devices has caused them to suffer CTE. Dr. Ann McKee, chief of neuropathology at VA Boston Healthcare System and the director of the BU CTE Center, says bomb blasts can damage the brain like a physical blow.
