The Revolution added some scoring punch Thursday when they finalized a deal with the Columbus Crew for forward Kei Kamara.

Kamara, 31, is the second-leading active scorer in Major League Soccer and was runner-up for last season’s league MVP award to Toronto's Sebastian Giovinco. He had five goals in nine games for Columbus this season.

The Revolution sent their highest first-round draft pick in 2017, their highest second-round pick in 2018, a 2016 international roster spot, and money to Columbus for Kamara.

“We have been looking to strengthen our team, and we feel that this addition accomplishes just that,’’ said Revolution general manager Michael Burns. “Kei is a player who has had success and is a proven goal scorer in MLS. We’re pleased we were able to get this deal done and look forward to Kei’s arrival and integration into the team.’’

However, Kamara does bring issues. He recently feuded with teammate Federico Higuain over a penalty kick and was suspended and fined for his comments on the matter. Crew coach Gregg Berhalter told the Columbus Dispatch that played a role in the trade.

“That wasn’t necessarily the trigger to make this happen. But that gave us a good indication of where he is at, in terms of buying into what we are doing. His point of view was made clear to us,’’ Berhalter said.

Kamara, who is from Sierra Leone, tied for the MLS lead in goals last season with 22 and was named to the All-Star team. He will take one of New England’s designated player roster spots. According to the Dispatch, Kamara earlier this year signed a three-year contract believed to be worth about $1 million a season.

The Revolution are 1-3-7 this season and have scored 13 goals.
