Berkshire gained $29b from tax law

NEW YORK — Berkshire Hathaway’s bottom line for 2017 got a big lift from the new federal tax law. In an annual letter to Berkshire’s shareholders Saturday, the company’s chief executive, Warren Buffett, said the conglomerate recorded a more than $29 billion gain related to the income tax overhaul that became law in December. Rules on methane cannot be stalled

A second judge has told the Trump administration that it cannot keep stalling clean-air rules for oil and gas production on federal lands. US District Judge William Orrick of the Northern District of California ordered the Interior Department on Thursday to reinstate the Obama-era rule aimed at restricting methane emissions. He said the delay is ‘‘untethered to evidence’’ and may harm people’s health and the climate. (AP)

White House attack leads to charges

A Tennessee woman is facing multiple charges after allegedly ramming a White House security barrier with her car. District police said Jessica R. Ford, 35, of La Vergne, Tenn., was charged with assault, unlawful possession of a firearm, and destroying property. The building was under lockdown for about an hour Friday, but the suspect was arrested without further incident. Ford was convicted last year of trying to climb a barrier at the White House. Mexico’s president won’t visit US

Tentative plans for President Enrique Peña Nieto of Mexico to make his first visit to the White House to meet with President Trump were scuttled this week. A testy call between the leaders ended in an impasse over Trump’s promised border wall, according to US and Mexican officials. Peña Nieto was eyeing a trip to Washington this month or next, but called off the plan. (Washington Post)
